The group was formed when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Daddy B) asked his friend rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J) to collaborate on a project based on positive vibes and infectious warfare. Watson added vocals to his singing skills, and Dirty Heads, along with drummer John Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa, and bassist Dave Forall, began to attract a wider audience.
In 2008, Dirty Heads released their debut album Any Port in the Storm, which was released in 2010. The deluxe edition features the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Roma Ramirez from Sublime. In May 2010, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and nine weeks later it held the longest charting record for an independently released title.
Two years later they released Cabin on the Beach and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This resulted in the 2013 full-length album Family: Dreams of Summer. Dirty Heads’ follow-up album, Sound of Change, was a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200 and topping the independent and alternative albums charts upon its release in May 2014.

Riding on their newfound success, Dirty Heads received rave reviews from industry professionals and invited them to work on their 2016 self-titled follow-up, which reached the top of the Billboard Top 200 chart due to popularity. The following year, the band released their sixth studio album. The album, Swim Squad, included the original songs “Vacation” and “Stalloney”.
Inspired by fans’ interpretations of their music for current events and the #VacationTransition challenge, the band hit the studio to work on new music. In 2021, Dirty Heads released Best of Dirty Heads, featuring new collaborations with Travis Barker and The Interrupters’ Amy Interrupter. Let’s take a summer vacation with Dirty Heads SOJA, which recently sold out. In August 2022, the band also released their highly-anticipated 8th studio album, Midnight Control, which contained 10 new songs, including a cover of Joe Walsh’s 1978 hit “Life Is Good”. “Life’s Better” is once again an instant hit as it has been at #3 on BDS for consecutive weeks and has already amassed over 7.4 million global streams across all platforms.
