Sheeran’s new album is the follow-up to 2021’s “=” and will be released on May 5 via Asylum/Atlantic. ‘-‘ is described in press documents as “the last album of the 10-year math album era” and an acoustic album rewritten and re-recorded in the face of personal turmoil.
“I’ve been working on ‘Substract’ for ten years, trying to create the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear understanding of what it’s all about,” said Sheeran, who wrote the song. “Then, in early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and my perception of music and art.

He continued, “Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I wrote my songs without thinking about the ending, I just wrote what would come out. And in just over a week I replaced my deepest thoughts with a decade’s worth of work.”
Earlier this year, Sheeran told fans that a “tumultuous” period in his life left him unable to interact on social media, but he did not elaborate on those difficulties.
