Josh Turner Reflects On ‘long Black Train’ On Its Milestone 20th Anniversary

When country music star Josh Turner was growing up, cassette tapes were the best way to listen to music, and vinyl was slowly dying.

He was familiar with his parents’ record collection, which had a huge influence on his music career, but later CDs began to gain popularity, lining music sets in stores.

“Oh my gosh, it was stuff you can’t find at Walmart,” Turner told the Shaw Local News Network in a phone interview Monday.

His biggest influence was one record, Live at San Quentin by Johnny Cash, which, he says, changed his opinion on how music could be performed and his perception of himself as an artist. Cash recorded it live at San Quentin State Prison in 1969.

“I had never heard a live recording before,” Turner said. “He sings in prison…he’s there with June Carter, Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers. It would have been great to witness.”
