Mr. Bojangles is quirky and warm, played with kindness and respect by songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker, who was Earl’s mentor over the years.
Steve Earle’s ‘copperhead Road’ Is Tennessee’s Newest State Song
It’s a tribute to Walker, who took Earle under his wing as a young songwriter in Nashville in the ’70s alongside Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Earl paid Zandt and Clark the same way in 2009.
. One cold evening in his New York apartment, Earl speaks of the trio with great reverence and affection.
Earl speaks quickly and excitedly. Talking to him about politics, American society, songwriting, Trumpism, theater and what he thinks is the best beach in Sydney (Coogee). At the start of our conversation, he quickly expressed his love for Arsenal football, until we realized we could quickly run out of our interview time and do better. He quickly laughs and calls himself “poor bozi boy”.

Over the past few years, Earl has faced more than his fair share of trouble. He split from wife Alison Moore in 2012 and tragically lost famed songwriter Justin Townes Earle to an accidental overdose in 2020. Just months after his defeat, Earle recorded JT, a tender, heartbreaking album that featured songs about his late son. He spoke briefly about himself in our conversation, saying that the months after his death have been very dark.
Now in his late 60s, Earl is busier than ever. Now he writes music.
, and his touring schedule is usually very busy, playing around 63 shows in 90 days during the North American summer. He will be returning to our shores to play one of his favorite festivals, Bluesfest.
Steve Earle Tours Jerry Jeff Walker
Musical food. I would like to start with a question that has nothing to do with music. You have been involved in politics a lot during your career. How do you feel about the politics there now? Do you think it will calm down a little after Trump?
Steve Earle. That’s funny. The reason I’m angry with some of my friends is because… My political side has completely forgotten that their job is to make the world a better place for working people. It’s all leftist thinking.
As a lesson for everything. But a lot of my friends say, “What’s West Virginia like?” They started talking bad about it and insulting Joe Manchin. They will say that it is a red case and it is not. Love him or hate him, they still have a Democratic senator. And it’s better than having a Republican senator.
Q&a With Musician Steve Earle: ‘we Have More In Common With Other Human Beings Than We Think’
To be honest, I started supporting Joe Biden early because I thought he was the only one who could be elected. He really didn’t do anything wrong.
MF: There is a perception among some that America is in decline and that the vision of the American dream is fading. As someone who has watched it for years, what do you think of it?
Steve: I think… It’s not a democracy if you can’t start a conversation with someone who disagrees with you when you start the conversation. raw We hope to learn that in this lesson. It’s the only thing we can hope for.

MF: Jerry Jeff, you released your 22nd album earlier this year. What Jerry Jeff Walker music has moved you? What inspired you to make this album?
Steve: Van Zandt Towns, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff, they were my people. I learned about Guy Clark from Jerry Jeff Walker on his blog. – Mr. Bojangles was recorded in Houston’s former Towns division.
In high school, my drama teacher asked me to sing “Bojangles” in our high school play, so she gave me my first record. So I started singing that song when I was 14 years old. I was famous for that song in high school and when I was 19 I met Jerry Jeff Walker and had to stop singing it. And one of the good things about that project is that I get to sing this song again.
Steve Earle Comes To Town With Backing Band For First Time Since 1997
M.F. I did a project like this on Towns, Guy. Is this album almost a tribute to these artists?
Steve: It’s funny: I thought it was over. But someone said I should do a Doug Sahm album someday, and maybe I will. He was my first local rock and roll hero.
Those three [you mentioned] had an immediate impact on me. I got some old training from them and just wanted to say thanks because not everyone does.
Review: Steve Earle, St George’s
MF: You spent your whole life on the road. Next year I will be coming to Australia alone, not with the Dukes. Traveling is really a tough business these days. They are more expensive than ever. Should I call more about going it alone now?
Steve: I’m not the caller. It’s about what they call it. They couldn’t keep up with my pace. The way I go now is to take it easy for 3 months in the summer. that’s what I do. The rest of the time I have to send [son] John Henry to school in New York City.
Basically, I try to earn money in those 3 months. There is no way to do this except to get on the bus and stay on the bus for 90 days. Not for the faint of heart.
Steve Earle: Alone Again Tour At Neptune Theatre In Seattle, Wa
MF: You have been living in New York for several years now. But I spent time in Tennessee during the epidemic. Is that true?
Steve: Well, I’ve been back for about three months. When it was all over we came back. We returned in early September to take John Henry to school. I almost did something crazy because I couldn’t get anywhere. I was lucky enough to have a nice house in the country, but Justin died at the end of that period. So I really had to get out of there. I don’t remember such a good moment in my life. Nobody thinks so.
MF: We talked about you paying Towns, Guy, and now Jerry Jeff. Does anyone want to cover your song after you’re gone?

Steve: Oh, I don’t know. I don’t care that I’m gone, cover it now. [
