Martin continued to write, contributing pieces to The New Yorker, publishing the essays Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company and the autobiography Born Standing Up. Recently, he published a book called The Thing of Beauty. Between all these projects, Martin is working with music. The singer has long incorporated banjo into his stand-up act but first gained critical acclaim with his 2001 cover of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In 2009, he released a 5-string banjo for his debut album, The Crow: New Songs, which featured Dolly Parton. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Martin appeared solo and with other musicians on the Grand Ole Opry. Inspired by his love of bluegrass, he created the Steve Martin Award for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, which includes a monetary award for musicians.
